Crypts
Crypts are the primary source of equipment crafting materials in Total Battle. Running crypts consistently is how you gear up your hero and captains — skipping them means permanent long-term weakness.
Three Crypt Types
| Type | Costs | Rewards | Research Required |
|---|---|---|---|
| Common | Tar | Crafting materials for standard gear | Crypts I |
| Rare | Rare Tar | Gems for socketing into equipment | Crypts II + Dragon Key |
| Epic | Epic Tar | Materials for unique-tier equipment | Crypts III |
Common and Epic Crypts have a chance to yield double materials per hit. Rare Crypts do not.
How Crypts Work
A crypt has a total HP pool. Each march is one hit and deals a fixed amount of damage. The crypt clears when its HP reaches zero.
Key formula: Total Tar needed = (Crypt HP ÷ Damage per hit) × Cost per hit
Three stats affect your efficiency:
| Stat | Effect |
|---|---|
| Exploration Cost Bonus | Reduces Tar consumed per hit — most reliable improvement |
| Exploration Efficiency | Increases progress per hit — only worth investing in when it pushes you below a whole-hit threshold |
| Double-Strike probability | Chance that one hit counts as two without extra Tar — pure bonus |
Priority rule: Invest in Cost reduction first. Efficiency only matters when the bonus moves you past a whole-hit threshold; otherwise it wastes shards.
Carrying 10% more Tar than the base requirement triggers a bonus efficiency multiplier. Always carry slightly over.
Tar Sources
| Tar Type | How to Obtain |
|---|---|
| Common Tar | Wellspring Ruins on the World Map; daily chests |
| Rare Tar | Dragon Keys from Elven Citadels on the World Map |
| Epic Tar | Tournament rewards; special event milestones |
Base maximum march time is 20 minutes. The Ayrin hero, research, and talent points extend this — longer marches mean fewer trips to start manually.
Carter Captain
Carter is the dedicated crypt captain. Always assign him to crypt marches.
- His bonuses reduce Tar cost and increase exploration efficiency
- His bonuses are capped at a certain level — check in-game to confirm the current cap; do not waste shards past it
- Investing in Carter early is one of the highest-return decisions in the game
Why Crypts Matter
Crypts drop the crafting materials for every equipment slot on your hero and captains. Better gear means:
- Higher army strength and health in every fight
- More Leadership (larger marches)
- Better crypt runs (dedicated crypt gear reduces Tar cost further)
The gear loop accelerates over time. Start running crypts as early as possible.
Daily Habit
Run at least one Common Crypt per day. Even partial clears generate materials. The players who gear up fastest are the ones who run crypts daily without exception.
